At Author Health, we are on a mission to improve access to high-quality mental health care for older adults with complex mental health conditions. Our multidisciplinary care team uses a virtual-first, technology-enabled model to deliver comprehensive wraparound mental health services to older adults with serious mental illness (SMI), substance use disorders (SUD) and dementia. We serve Medicare Advantage, traditional Medicare and Dual-Eligible populations through value-based partnerships with leading plans and health systems.

Role Overview

The Associate Director of Psychiatric Services is a senior clinical leadership role created to support the growth and quality of Author Health's psychiatric NP workforce. Working closely with the Senior Medical Director, Geriatric Psychiatry, this role provides direct oversight and development of Lead NPs across our clinical pod structure, owns the full NP recruitment and onboarding lifecycle, and serves as a key operational and technology champion across the psychiatry team.

Author Health's psychiatric services are organized into clinical pods — each consisting of a supervising psychiatrist (MD) and a team of nurse practitioners — and are growing. Each pod is supported by a Lead NP: a senior nurse practitioner in a hybrid clinical-operational role responsible for fielding clinical questions from the pod, supporting the pod psychiatrist, tracking quality and efficiency metrics, and coaching pod members. The Associate Medical Director works across all pods, providing direct oversight and development of Lead NPs. In addition to cross-pod leadership responsibilities, the Associate Medical Director may serve as the Lead NP for a designated clinical pod, maintaining direct accountability for that pod's clinical quality, operational performance, and team development — modelling the hybrid clinical-operational responsibilities of the Lead NP role.

This role maintains a direct patient care component and is grounded in Author Health's virtual-first care model.

Responsibilities

Administrative Responsibilities (40-60% of time; up to 80%)

1. Lead NP Management

• Directly oversee and coach Lead NPs across pods, providing guidance on clinical workflows, documentation standards, technology tools, and interdisciplinary collaboration

• Support Lead NPs in executing their supervisory responsibilities, including training pod members and serving as the first point of contact for clinical and operational questions

• Review performance metrics with Lead NPs at regular intervals and ensure Lead NPs conduct the same cadence of review with their pods

• Conduct documentation audits and support Lead NPs in doing the same, maintaining high standards of clinical quality across the psychiatry team

• Serve as the escalation point for issues surfaced through Lead NPs that require senior clinical or operational judgment 

• Potential to serve as the Lead NP for a designated pod, directly modeling the hybrid clinical-operational standard expected of all Lead NPs

• Drive initiatives that build connection and trust within a remote setting, ensuring Lead NPs foster a supportive and collaborative atmosphere for all interdisciplinary team members.

1. Recruitment, Onboarding & Training

• Lead and oversee recruitment process strategy and execution for psychiatric NPs, from applicant screening through offer, with accountability for building and maintaining a strong candidate pipeline, in close partnership with the recruitment team.

• Own the full onboarding lifecycle for the psychiatry team, from orientation and the early integration period, to onboarding training and ongoing development ensuring providers are practice-ready and supported through the first 90 days

• Develop and maintain onboarding materials current as workflows, programs, and clinical initiatives evolve in partnership with clinical operations and office or learning and development program

• Partner with the Senior Medical Director to develop and deliver content for provider teaching and training modules

• Co-lead weekly provider meetings to strengthen team culture, introduce new initiatives, and communicate clinical and operational updates

1. Clinical Operations & Tech Support

• Synthesize clinician feedback and operational patterns into actionable recommendations for clinical leadership, bringing both problem identification and strategic perspective

• Track key performance dashboards in alignment with clinical leadership, with accountability for clinician throughput and other organizational qualitative and productivity metrics

• Serve as a SuperUser and internal champion for new technology, product pilots, and care design initiatives, translating rollouts into practical guidance for the team

Clinical Responsibilities (40-60% of time; no less than 20% time)

• Provide direct clinical care

• Provide cross-coverage during provider absences, vacations and transitions

• Rotate through on-call responsibilities (~2 weeks/year)

Requirements

Clinical & Licensure

• Board-certified PMHNP with an unrestricted license to practice in Florida and willingness to obtain licensure in all states where Author Health operates, currently and in the future

• Additional certifications such as Doctor of Nursing Practice, Master of Business Administration, or Master of Public Health preferred

• 5+ years of experience providing direct psychiatric care to complex medical patients, including older adults with SMI, SUD, and dementia

• Experience with Medicare Advantage, dual-eligible populations, or value-based care delivery preferred

Leadership & Clinical Operations

• Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or management experience in outpatient settings

• Leadership experience in value-based care organizations strongly preferred

• Willingness to learn and operate within Author Health's care model, including clinical policies and procedures

• Demonstrated leadership track record in change management, team performance improvement, and delivery of organizational goals and key results

• Strong sense of initiative; comfortable in a startup environment with the ability to manage ambiguity, work flexibly, and adapt to evolving business priorities

• Detail-oriented and efficient in evaluating and summarizing complex clinical and operational information

• Excellent clinical judgment with the ability to escalate concerns appropriately

• High interpersonal awareness; empathic and collaborative, with a demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and sensitivity to team diversity

• Excellent verbal, written, and nonverbal communication skills

• Skilled educator with the ability to engage provider interest and sustain attention across varied learning contexts

• Aligned with the Senior Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer on clinical and operational goals for clinical services

This is a full-time role. Occasional travel (up to 10%) may be required for team gatherings, health system site visits, or payer-facing engagements.
