Assistant Director Laboratory

Overview

The Assistant Director of Laboratory Services position is responsible for assisting in the supervision of laboratory testing to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Responsibilities

• Assumes the responsibilities of the Director of Laboratory Services in their absence, ensuring continuity of departmental operations.
• Actively participates in the selection and implementation of new laboratory procedures and the improvement of existing processes.
• Schedules laboratory staffing coverage, assigns work duties, and establishes work priorities to ensure efficient workflow.
• Develops, evaluates, or assists in the development and evaluation of quality control programs for all laboratory sections.
• Prepares, reviews, and certifies departmental payroll records.
• Assists Administration in the development and preparation of the department's annual budget.
• Assists in evaluating employee performance and establishing departmental goals, objectives, and performance expectations.
• Interviews prospective employees and provides recommendations regarding hiring, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
• Serves as a liaison between the laboratory, other hospital departments, medical staff, and Administration.
• Coordinates departmental in-service education and training activities to support staff development and regulatory compliance.
• Compiles and provides statistical reports and operational data to Administration as requested.
• Coordinates and oversees the department's proficiency testing program to ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards.
• Assists with the orientation and training of new employees regarding departmental procedures and hospital policies.
• Ensures the accurate maintenance, retention, and security of all required departmental records.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Preferred: Master's Degree from an accredited institution with a major in a chemical, physical, or biological science and a minimum of four (4) years of relevant clinical laboratory experience following graduation, including at least two (2) years in the designated laboratory specialty and two (2) years in a supervisory role.

• Required: Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology from a CAHEA-accredited School of Medical Technology with certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency and a minimum of four (4) years of relevant clinical laboratory experience, including two (2) years in a supervisory position; OR

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution with a major in a chemical, physical, or biological science, along with a minimum of six (6) years of relevant hospital clinical laboratory experience. Candidates must have completed coursework and training providing technical and professional knowledge comparable to that of a Medical Technologist, including a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience; OR

• Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a nationally accredited program with certification through a nationally recognized accrediting agency and a minimum of six (6) years of experience in all major laboratory disciplines.

• Certification as a Medical Technologist through a nationally recognized accrediting body based on education, testing, and experience preferred.

Experience

• One (1) to three (3) years of leadership or supervisory experience required.

Licenses & Certifications

• Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification preferred.

• Additional state and federal laboratory certifications may be required based on regulatory standards and organizational requirements.
