Assistant Dean for Student Affairs

The Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University invites applications for an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, a 12-month position with a 50% FTE commitment. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean will be a valued member of the Office of Student Affairs leadership team and play an important role in supporting the success, development, and well-being of our medical students.

The Assistant Dean works closely with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to implement, coordinate, and continuously enhance programs and services that support students throughout their medical education. This includes initiatives focused on:

• Academic success and student support
• Personal and professional development
• Career exploration and preparation
• Student well-being and wellness
• A positive, inclusive, and supportive educational experience

This is a highly collaborative role with significant direct engagement with medical students. The Assistant Dean partners with faculty, staff, course and clerkship leadership, and colleagues across the School of Medicine and University to help create an environment in which students can thrive.

The Assistant Dean may maintain, as appropriate, teaching responsibilities in School of Medicine courses or clerkships, provided those responsibilities do not involve the academic evaluation of students.

Student Support, Advising, and Well-Being

• Provide individualized academic, professional, and personal guidance to medical students and assist students in navigating challenges that may affect their progress or educational experience.
• Support the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in developing and implementing programs that promote student success, well-being, resilience, and professional growth.
• Identify students who may benefit from additional support and facilitate timely connection with appropriate School of Medicine and University resources.
• Collaborate with faculty, course and clerkship leadership, academic support services, the Office of Accessibility, mental health and wellness resources, and other partners to support students while maintaining appropriate confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Serve as a visible, accessible, and trusted member of the Office of Student Affairs and promote a culture of respect, belonging, and student-centered support.

Advising and Mentoring Programs

• Provide leadership for designated components of the School of Medicine’s student advising and mentoring programs under the direction of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
• Recruit, orient, support, and serve as a resource to faculty participating in student advising
• Develop and deliver resources, programming, and faculty development that enhance the quality and consistency of student advising.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of advising and mentoring programs and contribute to their ongoing development and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with the Associate Dean and other School of Medicine leaders on initiatives related to coaching, mentoring, professional identity formation, and student development.

Career Development and Residency Advising

• Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and other faculty and staff to support the School’s comprehensive career advising program, including specialty exploration, residency preparation, and Match-related programming.
• Provide career advising to students across all phases of medical education, including guidance related to specialty choice, professional development, and preparation for residency.
• Assist in the development and delivery of workshops, advising resources, and programming related to residency applications, interviewing, specialty selection, and Match preparation.
• Contribute to other residency application and Match-related processes as assigned by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

Student Programming and Engagement

• Collaborate with Student Affairs leadership and staff in the development and delivery of programming across the medical student experience.
• Participate in planning and implementation of major student programs and events, including Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Match Day, Recommitment Ceremony, Commencement, and other milestone events.
• Support initiatives that promote student belonging and engagement, leadership development, community-building, and professional identity formation.
• Represent the Office of Student Affairs at School of Medicine programs, meetings, and events as requested by the Associate Dean.

Student Progress and Advocacy

• Support the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in matters related to student progress, promotion, professionalism, and academic support.
• Participate in meetings and committees related to student progress and performance as appropriate to the role.
• Help students understand processes related to academic progress, promotion, remediation, and other relevant policies while maintaining appropriate separation between student support/advocacy and student assessment.
• Collaborate with appropriate faculty and staff to facilitate individualized support plans and resources for students when needed.

Program Evaluation, Accreditation, and Continuous Quality Improvement

• Collaborate with the Associate Dean and Student Affairs staff in collecting, reviewing, and analyzing data related to student advising, career development, well-being, engagement, and other Student Affairs programs.
• Contribute to continuous quality improvement efforts designed to assess and enhance Student Affairs programs and the student experience.
• Assist with preparation of documentation and data related to LCME accreditation requirements and other institutional reporting needs relevant to Student Affairs.
• Participate in the development, implementation, and periodic review of Student Affairs policies, procedures, programs, and resources.

Leadership and Administration

• Support the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in carrying out the mission and priorities of the Office of Student Affairs.
• Work collaboratively with the Director of Student Affairs,other members of the Student Affairs team, and University offices to ensure coordinated, responsive, and student-centered services.
• Represent the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at meetings, committees, programs, or events when requested and when appropriate to the responsibilities of the role.
• Handle sensitive and confidential student matters with discretion, empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment.
• Participate in the Office of Student Affairs’ system for responding to urgent student needs outside of regular business hours, as assigned.

• MD or PhD required; a physician degree is preferred. Background in education or behavioral psychology preferred

• 5-7 years of experience in undergraduate medical education and demonstrated experience advising, mentoring, coaching, or supporting medical students is required.
• Demonstrated commitment to medical student success, well-being, professional development, and career preparation.
• Knowledge of the medical education continuum, including medical school academic requirements, specialty and career decision-making, residency application processes, and expectations for successful transition to graduate medical education.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish trusting and effective relationships with students.
• Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and institutional leaders.
• Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate programs.
• Ability to manage sensitive and confidential matters with discretion, empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment.
• Familiarity with LCME accreditation standards and best practices in medical student affairs, advising, career development, and student support is preferred.
