ASSISTANT COOK

Job Details: Job Location: Social Services - 218 - Brooklyn , NY, Position Type: Part Time, Education Level: High School, Salary Range: $21.65 - $24.75Hourly, IMPACCT Brooklyn is hiring an Assistant Cook to work alongside our Cook, getting meals out on time and done right - prepping ingredients,  helping with service, and keeping the kitchen clean from the first pot to the last pan. You'll also help keep our inventory in good shape by receiving deliveries, rotating stock, organizing refrigerators, freezers, and storage rooms, and handling garbage removal to keep the space sanitary. If you move with purpose during a busy service, take pride in a clean station and a well-stocked shelf, treat food safety and New York City Department of Health standards as non-negotiable, and bring warmth and respect to residents and teammates alike, we'd like to meet you. This position reports to the Cook.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Properly cleaning and sanitizing all food preparation areas according to established standards of hygiene.
Washing and appropriately storing all cooking appliances, instruments, utensils, cutting boards, and dishes.
Deep cleaning water dispensers, oven, stove top, and range hood.
Assisting the Cook with the preparation of meal ingredients, which includes washing, cleaning, peeling, cutting, and chopping fruit, vegetables, poultry, and meat.
Sweeping and mopping the kitchen floors as well as wiping down kitchen walls and countertops.
Assisting with the unloading of delivered food supplies.
Organizing, cleaning and correctly storing food supplies.
Promptly transferring meal ingredients from storage areas to the kitchen as per the Cook's instructions.

Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
Proven experience assisting in a kitchen, preferably in an institutional, cafeteria, congregate, or food service setting.
Must hold a NYC Department of Health Food Protection Certificate or demonstrated ability to obtain one within 2–4 months of hire.
Sound knowledge of food health and safety regulations, including safe food handling, storage, and sanitation practices.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in a kitchen environment.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and adjust to changing priorities during meal service.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Effective communication skills and the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods; use hands for fine manipulation; handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms; and taste and smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

The work environment is a standard kitchen and cafeteria setting. The noise level is moderate to high depending on the time of day and resident population. The employee may be exposed to a variety of conditions, including wet or humid surfaces, work near moving mechanical parts, extreme heat from ovens, stoves, and dishwashers, cold from walk-in refrigeration units, sharp objects, and cleaning chemicals.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a part-time Non-Exempt position, 20 hours per week. Monday through Friday, 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required to meet meal service needs. The Assistant Cook covers for the Cook during planned or unplanned absences, and may be asked to work additional hours during those periods.

This position is not benefits-eligible.  Employees accrue paid safe and sick leave in accordance with the New York City Earned Safe and Sick Time Act.
