Job Description:

This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) ASOSU Graduate Senator for the ASOSU at Oregon State University (OSU).

The ASOSU Student Senator serves as an elected representative of the student body and is responsible for advocating on behalf of students through legislation, policy development, fiscal oversight, and constituent engagement. Senators work collaboratively to identify student needs, improve student experience, and ensure that student perspectives are represented in university governance and decision-making. The Senate serves as the legislative branch of the ASOSU Student Government and is responsible for establishing official ASOSU policies, positions, and priorities.

Given the evolving priorities of the student body and Oregon State University, these responsibilities (including those provided below) may be amended or vary depending on ongoing priorities, legislative initiatives, or emergent issues. Student Senators work collaboratively with fellow Senators, the ASOSU Executive Branch, Judicial Council, university administration, campus partners, and members of the student body to fulfill the mission of ASOSU.

Please note:

• ASOSU Senator seats are filled through an appointment committee consisting of the ASOSU President, ASOSU Vice President, President Pro Tempore, and Judicial Council Chair.

• You must be either a current graduate student or accepted for the 2026-2027 academic year as a graduate student.

The Undergraduate Student Support Services Worker performs a variety of work related to the support and enhancement of the quality of student life at the university.

Position Duties:

• Represent the interests of the student body and serve as an accessible resource for students regarding ASOSU and university concerns.

• Engage in legislative discussion and decision-making on issues affecting Oregon State University students.

• Research, draft, sponsor, and deliberate legislation, resolutions, and policy initiatives that improve the student experience.

• Participate in oversight of ASOSU fiscal matters, including review and recommendation of budgets, expenditures, and incidental fees as required.

• Participate in Senate confirmation processes for appointments as required by the Constitution.

• Review and vote on legislation, appointments, resolutions, and other matters brought before the Senate.

• Maintain regular communication with constituents to better understand student concerns, priorities, and emerging issues.

• Conduct outreach to students through conversations, events, tabling, classroom visits, surveys, or other engagement opportunities.

• Collaborate with university departments, student organizations, and campus partners to identify opportunities to improve campus life and student success.

• Serve on at least one ASOSU Standing Committee or an approved university committee and actively participate in committee meetings and assigned work.

• Provide committee reports and updates during Senate meetings when applicable.

• Promote transparency, accountability, and ethical governance in all ASOSU activities.

• Uphold the ASOSU Constitution, Statutes, Standing Rules, university policies, and applicable state laws, including Oregon Public Meetings Law.

• Foster an inclusive environment that encourages student participation and democratic engagement.

• Support initiatives that promote academic success, community wellbeing, civic engagement, and student advocacy consistent with the mission of ASOSU.

Qualifications:

• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

  • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term

  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*

  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term

  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Required Qualifications: 

• For this particular position, student must be a graduate student.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Must be a Corvallis campus-based student.

• Maintenance of good academic and conduct standing and a cumulative and prior term 2.0 GPA.

• Commitment to promoting and advancing diversity and creating an atmosphere of inclusion for all students and community members.

• Communication skills in areas including but not limited to interpersonal, public speaking, digital, verbal, and written communications.

• Organizational skills, including managing time and working accurately with interruptions to meet a deadline; delegating tasks, when applicable.

• Working well under pressure, exercising flexibility, initiative, good judgment, and discretion.
