Animal Control Officer PT

King and Queen County Sheriff W.R. Balderson appreciates your interest in the position of Animal Control Officer with our Sheriff's office.  We are seeking a goal motivated team member to join the office in this part-time position.  This position may work up to 29 hours weekly.  

The Animal Control Officer is responsible for enforcing animal control laws set by the state and county. The Animal Control Officer is also responsible for enforcing Virginia laws and regulations. The King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office will provide the Animal Control Officer with a uniform and equipment. A take-home car will be provided if the employee lives in the county and responds to 75% of all callouts. County residency may be waived by the Sheriff.

The following are minimum requirements for this position:

• 18 years of age (non-sworn technician) 
• 21 years of age (potential to be a sworn deputy)
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Valid Driver’s License
• Animal Control Officer certified within a year of employment.
• Court Security/Civil Process Certified within a year, if 21 years of age or older.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: 

The position of Animal Control Officer is inherently a high stress and physically demanding position. All sworn/unsworn employees must complete a basic course and maintain the skills and physical fitness.

The following activities are expected of all sworn/unsworn Animal Control Officers.

• Sit or stand for long periods of time 4-8 hours.
• Bend, reach, climb, and run are daily functions in this position. 
• Lift up to 50 pounds regularly, 50-75 pounds often, 75-100 pounds occasionally.
• The position carries inherent risks, and the employee may encounter dangerous situations and tasks on a daily basis.

The following are essential functions and typical daily tasks:

•  Responding to complaints from citizens.
• Issuing citations and warnings to individuals alleged to have mistreated animals.
• Capturing/trapping stray animals.
• Handling incidents with dangerous or destructive domesticated animals.
• Investigating livestock death or damage for claims purposes.
• Investigating animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment.
• Taking lost, abandoned, stray, or surrendered animals to the Animal Shelter.
• Rescuing trapped animals.
• Help with euthanasia of unclaimed animals, when needed. 
• Examine animals for injuries or malnutrition.
• Enforcing licensing and rabies laws.
• Provide testimony in court cases.
• Writing incident reports and prepare monthly and annual reports.
• Make formal presentations on topics dealing with animal welfare and animal related laws at the request and approval of the Sheriff.
• Complete all tasks that a Court Security Deputy or a Patrol Deputy can perform, if 21 
  years of age or older and certified.
• May work as a runner for Court Security, if needed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Must have acquired a certification for VICIN or have the ability to acquire certification within one year.

Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.

Complete a comprehensive background investigation to include polygraph and psychological examination. 

Pre-employment and ongoing drug testing. 

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

All employees of the King and Queen County Sheriff's Office may be called upon to serve the citizens of the county in the event of a disaster such as a hurricane, tornado, flood, fire, and/or any other event classified by the county as an emergency.
