Agility Instructor (Part-Time)

Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed at moving the city towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Applicant Instigation Unit (AIU) Agility Team is searching for a proactive team member that is interested in improving lives through health and fitness and advancing effective trauma sensitive wellness and fitness programs designed to optimize the capacity to meet the physical and mental demands of working in a correctional environment. The ideal candidate must be able to walk and/or stand in an assigned area for approximately eight (8) hours continuously. Applicants should be excited for the opportunity to build and grow a thriving fitness and wellness focus for leading candidates to successfully complete the Agility Fitness Test and exercise resilience as a NYC Department of Correction Employee.

Typical tasks include but are not limited to the following:

Perform Candidate Assessment by administering the NYCD Physical Agility Test.

Verbally communicate Agility Test debrief to candidates and physically demonstrate proper form/techniques required to perform the NYCD Physical Agility Test.

Complete Task as assigned and directed by Supervisor

Complete Agility Test Stats Report

Complete daily Candidates’ Fitness Progress Report

Efficiently assess, design and conduct fitness and wellness trainings to improve strength, endurance, mobility, injury prevention, and stress management for candidates and correction staff.

Conduct individual and group fitness training and wellness exercises for uniform and non uniform staff at various department locations.

Perform administrative functions which include responding to emails, copying, filing and faxing.

Exercise the ability to set up gym equipment, run and lift up to 150lbs.

Contribute to team effort for accomplishing related results.

Ensure that accurate information is timely documented and communicated across various department units.

Please note: This position requires the ability to travel and work at various NYC Department of Correction locations.

Qualifications

Qualification Requirements
Certifications in First Aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) issued by the American Red Cross or other organization having an equivalent certification program recognized by the employing agency, and:
1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a major in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and fitness, physical education or a closely related field, plus 4 years of full-time paid experience in one or more of these areas, 1 year of which must have been in teaching exercise techniques; or

2. An Associate degree from an accredited college with a major in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and fitness, physical education or a closely related field, plus 6 years of full-time paid experience in one or more of these areas, 1 year of which must have been in teaching exercise techniques; or
