Organization: Breakthrough Summerbridge (BTSB)
Position Type: Part-Time / Seasonal
Positions Open: 1 Science Instructor and 1 Humanities Instructor
- Fall: teaching 7th graders
- Spring: teaching 8th graders
Teaching Commitment: Wednesday Afternoons, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Classes are from 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM. Instructors will teach twice each ASE session (same 40 minute lesson taught to two groups of students) with a 5 minute transition. Class sizes are capped at 18 students.

ABOUT BREAKTHROUGH SUMMERBRIDGE
Founded in 1978 at San Francisco University High School, Breakthrough Summerbridge (BTSB) is an intensive year round academic enrichment and advocacy program. Through our middle school programming, we prepare ambitious students from under-resourced circumstances to enter and thrive in well-matched high schools, for the purpose of securing admission to, succeeding in, and graduating from college. More recently, we have expanded our programming, through the creation of our high school (9th-12th grade) College Access Program (CAP) to support BTSB students who have successfully completed our middle school program. CAP broadens access to information and resources regarding college admissions by working directly with students and families as a resource for college preparedness and admissions.

Position Overview
We are seeking dedicated, dynamic educators to serve as After-School Enrichment (ASE) Instructors for our 7th and 8th-grade students. In this role, instructors design and deliver an engaging, interactive 3-lesson mini-unit where students work toward a final deliverable by the end of the unit.
- Science Instructor:
- 7th Grade: Mini-unit on Ecosystems or Earth’s Natural Resources with emphasis on developing and testing designs or models
- 8th Grade: Topic related to 9th-grade Biology curriculum anchored in Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Biology).
- Humanities Instructor:
- 7th Grade: Unit centered around a short story or collection of short stories with emphasis on literacy skills (could be fiction or non-fiction, historical or current event). Reading level should be 7th grade or higher.
- 8th Grade: Development of foundational skills used in 9th grade college prep Humanities course (English/Social Studies)
Key Responsibilities
- Attend virtual orientation session with BTSB Director of Programming and Instruction (DPI) in October (for Fall) & February (for Spring)
- Submit unit overview and set of lesson plans by by 2 weeks prior to first ASE session
- Teach lessons that are interactive, hands-on learning experiences designed to keep middle schoolers motivated and engaged.
- Participate in a debrief meeting with DPI after the final lesson each semester
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- At least 3 years of successful professional teaching experience in middle or high school
- Demonstrated track record in curriculum development, standard alignment, and implementation.
- Deep knowledge of subject matter and familiarity with relevant instructional resources.
- Strong presentation, writing, classroom management, and organizational abilities.
