Summary: 
The Trevor Project’s Advocacy team seeks to provide high impact programs to help prevent LGBTQ youth from entering crisis and advance The Trevor Project’s mission to end suicide among LGBTQ young people. This includes life-saving advocacy and policy work in a variety of  key issues facing LGBTQ youth across the United States such as ending conversion therapy, increasing LGBTQ competency among crisis services support systems, advocating for welcoming spaces, protecting youth safety online while ensuring LGBTQ youth access to virtual community and resources, and fighting against state-level bills targeting transgender and nonbinary youth.

The Advocacy Associate will be responsible for supporting the Advocacy team and helping to establish Trevor as a key player in state advocacy. This position will be responsible for providing operational support by developing efficient procedures that streamline all operations for the team, creating and distributing Trevor-branded materials/research/talking points, expanding partnerships through relationship building, data collection, tracking legislation, assisting with facilitation of grassroots mobilization, and day-to-day responsibility for other tasks as assigned. Further, this individual will help coordinate the Advocacy Intern program, and help manage operational necessities for the department, including record keeping and coordinating scheduling and logistics for a high-paced, multifaceted, and remote team.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• System Administration: Configure and maintain team databases and tracking tools (Salesforce, Asana, Mobile Commons, Quorum); train staff, interns, and volunteers on their use. Maintain the Advocacy team inbox and calendar. 

• Process Improvement: Update team operations manuals, support workflows, and review performance dashboards.

• Budget & Logistics: Monitor the advocacy travel budget and manage logistics for travel, schedules, retreats, and community meetings.

• Compliance Tracking: Maintain tracking systems for lobbying and team activities to ensure regulatory compliance.

• Legislative Monitoring: Track and report on federal and state legislation, as well as regulatory agency actions.

• Content Development: Draft and edit policy memos, comments, social media graphics and posts, educational resources, talking points, and other advocacy resources.

• Data Analysis: Produce and analyze field-specific data to create public-facing reports and educational materials on LGBTQ policies. 

• Note Taking and Reporting: Attend virtual meetings and hearings, take notes and report back on relevant information for organizational efforts

• Program Coordination: Help coordinate the Advocacy Intern program.

• Coalition & Partner Support: Build and maintain relationships with key non-profit organizations and partners to strengthen LGBTQ advocacy coalitions.

• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate initiatives and engagement across internal teams (Research, Communications, Development, Marketing) and assist with corporate partnership deliverables.

• Advocacy & CRM Software: Hands-on experience navigating and administering tools like Salesforce, Quorum, and Mobile Commons to manage contact databases and track legislative campaigns.

• Project Management & Collaboration Tools: Deep familiarity with platform configuration and task tracking in Asana, Google Drive, and virtual communication spaces.

• Policy Writing & Compliance: Crafting clear, concise policy memos, public-facing letters, and talking points, alongside an understanding of tracking lobbying activities for legal compliance.

• Data Analysis & Reporting: Translating legislative data into accessible public reports, dashboards, and educational resources.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience: 1–3 years of experience in public policy, community organizing, non-profit administration, or legal/legislative operations.

• Mission Alignment: A demonstrable commitment to LGBTQ rights, youth mental health, or crisis intervention advocacy with an eagerness to grow support for LGBTQ rights among conflicted audiences .

• Organizational Skills: Proven ability to manage multi-stakeholder projects, coordinate large-scale meeting logistics, and balance operational needs in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrable planning and problem-solving skills, including multitasking and working well within tight timelines

• Proficiency in:
