Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP) Newborn Medicine Service -Wage

UVA Health is seeking a wage Advanced Practice Provider to join the Newborn Medicine Service in Charlottesville. This opportunity combines independent newborn care with a highly collaborative staffing model, meaningful teaching responsibilities, procedural experience, and immediate access to experienced physician and NICU support. 

The Role 

As an Advanced Practice Provider on the Newborn Medicine Service, you will care for newborns throughout their inpatient stay, from initial assessment through safe discharge. You will work within an established academic care team that includes attending pediatric physicians, APP colleagues, pediatric and family medicine residents, medical students, Labor and Delivery nurses, and the NICU team. 

The preferred candidate will initially complete a more concentrated orientation before transitioning into flexible wage scheduling and shift coverage. Two APPs are staffed each shift, so you will never be scheduled as the sole APP, providing consistent access to experienced colleagues as you manage the pace and complexity of inpatient newborn care. 

12-hour shifts, weekends required, no nights
 

In an average shift, you will: 

• Perform comprehensive newborn assessments and provide ongoing clinical management. 

• Attend deliveries when neonatal support is requested. 

• Participate in and develop confidence leading neonatal resuscitations. 

• Coordinate safe, family-centered discharge planning for newborn patients. 

• Educate parents and families about newborn care, health, and follow-up needs. 

• Teach and collaborate with pediatric residents, family medicine residents, and medical students. 

• Work closely with attending physicians, nursing colleagues, and multidisciplinary partners. 

• Perform circumcisions, with training available for candidates who have not previously completed the procedure. 

• Escalate care appropriately with immediate access to NICU expertise and resources. 

This role is well suited for a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner whose scope includes newborn care and who brings a strong interest in neonatal medicine. Experience with the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, newborn care, neonatal resuscitation, procedures, or clinical teaching is highly valued. Prior APP experience is welcomed, but strong newborn clinical skills, sound judgment, teamwork, and a commitment to learning are especially important.

• Participates in local, state, and national professional organizations

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.

Experience: Department and unit specific.

Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The pay range for this role is $55.82 - $82.29 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
