EDU 690  |  Migrants, Refugees, and Human Rights

The Rex and Margaret Fortune School of Education invites qualified faculty to apply to teach EDU 690: Migrants, Refugees, and Human Rights in the Master of Arts in Education & Social Justice program for the Fall 2026 quarter.

Course Overview

This course examines how migration and population displacement shape relationships between citizens and states. Drawing from historical and contemporary cases, this course explores the challenges refugees face and the political responses to their arrival in other nations. Students will also analyze these political responses through the lenses of human rights, democratic stability, and international cooperation. This course also discusses the impacts of climate-induced displacement and transnational organized crime.

Course Details

Units: 3 (graduate)
Prerequisites: EDU 615 and EDU 650
Term: Fall Quarter 2026 (10-week term), October 1 – December 10, 2026
Meetings: Thursdays, 6:00–9:30 p.m.
Wednesday exceptions: Two sessions meet on Wednesday, October 21 and Wednesday, November 18, to accommodate the FSE Board of Directors meetings.
Holiday: No class the week of Thanksgiving (November 26)
Format: Live evening instruction with online student support during independent coursework, including readings, discussion, and writing
Compensation: $65.00 per hour

Instructor Responsibilities

Deliver all scheduled class sessions and facilitate graduate-level discussion
Finalize the course syllabus using the program’s updated template, Program Learning Outcomes, and accreditation-aligned elements
Assess and provide timely feedback on student work
Support the program’s ongoing WSCUC self-study by collecting representative student work samples for this year’s Program Learning Outcome assessment focus (PLO 2: Scholarly Communication, Research Fluency, and Evidence-Based Practice; and PLO 4: Reflective Scholar-Practitioner Integration)

Qualifications:  

Qualifications & Expectations

FSE faculty are scholar-practitioners who integrate theory, research, and professional practice
A doctorate in a relevant field is preferred; a master’s degree is required
Subject-matter expertise in migration, refugee studies, human rights, or a closely related field
Ability to deliver academically rigorous, graduate-level instruction aligned to approved course and program learning outcomes, across synchronous and asynchronous modalities consistent with FSE’s quarter-credit-hour policy
Proficiency (or willingness to develop proficiency) in FSE’s learning management system, Populi
