Adjunct Faculty Lab Coordinator - Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing Programs

The Surgical Services Laboratory Instructional Assistant oversees the daily operation, organization, and maintenance of the Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing instructional laboratories. This position supports faculty, students, and adjunct instructors by preparing laboratory activities, maintaining equipment and supplies, assisting with student skill development, and ensuring a safe, organized, and realistic simulated healthcare environment. The Laboratory Instructional Assistant serves as the primary resource for both laboratory spaces, assisting with program operations, accreditation readiness, inventory management, and student success.

Responsibilities

Class and Student Support: Assist faculty with laboratory instruction by reinforcing surgical technology and sterile processing principles and demonstrating proper techniques during scheduled lab sessions and open laboratory hours; Provide guidance to students practicing psychomotor skills while ensuring compliance with program policies and safe laboratory practices; Assist students with laboratory assignments, competency preparation, checkoffs, and remediation activities; Prepare instructional materials, laboratory handouts, and simulation supplies for laboratory sessions; Support faculty with Canvas course materials, instructional videos, laboratory demonstrations, and digital learning resources as assigned; Monitor student attendance during open laboratory sessions and communicate student progress or concerns to faculty.

Laboratory Operations: Prepare and maintain laboratory spaces for all scheduled classes, laboratories, simulations, skills practice, competency evaluations, and special events; Set up and break down laboratory stations, surgical procedures, sterile processing workflows, instrument trays, case carts, and simulation scenarios; Clean, disinfect, inspect, and organize laboratory equipment following institutional policies and industry standards; Perform routine preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and coordinate repairs or service when necessary; Recommend replacement or purchase of equipment and supplies to maintain current industry standards; Manage laboratory scheduling outside of regular class hours to support student practice and faculty needs.

Inventory and Supply Management: Maintain inventory of surgical instruments, sterile processing equipment, simulation supplies, disposable items, and educational materials; Order, receive, stock, and organize laboratory supplies while monitoring budget allocations; Maintain instrument sets, peel packs, wrappers, biological indicators, sterilization monitoring supplies, and other educational resources; Coordinate annual inventory and assist with capital equipment planning; Ensure laboratory equipment and supplies meet accreditation and industry requirements.

Laboratory Safety and Compliance: Maintain a safe laboratory environment by enforcing all departmental, institutional, OSHA, CDC, and infection prevention policies; Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory materials and simulated biohazardous waste; Inspect laboratory safety equipment and maintain documentation of safety inspections; Respond appropriately to laboratory incidents, injuries, or safety concerns and communicate incidents to faculty and administration; Assist with maintaining laboratory documentation required for accreditation and regulatory compliance.

Program Support: Assist faculty with laboratory competency examinations, skills assessments, and practical evaluations; Maintain laboratory records including equipment maintenance logs, inventory records, safety documentation, and student laboratory usage; Participate in curriculum development by providing recommendations for laboratory improvements and new instructional technologies; Support accreditation activities through documentation, data collection, and laboratory readiness; Assist with student orientation, information sessions, advisory committee meetings, community outreach events, open houses, and recruitment activities; Prepare laboratory demonstrations for prospective students and community partners.

Collaboration: Collaborate with Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing faculty to ensure consistency in laboratory instruction and student experiences; Work with adjunct instructors to coordinate laboratory preparation and instructional support; Serve as a liaison between faculty, facilities, purchasing, vendors, and other college departments regarding laboratory operations.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not provide direct supervision but may coordinate the activities of student workers, laboratory assistants, or temporary personnel assigned to the Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing laboratories.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Associate degree in Surgical Technology, Sterile Processing, or a closely related healthcare field; Current nationally recognized certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and/or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), or ability to obtain required certification based on program needs; Minimum of three years of recent experience in perioperative services, sterile processing, or a related surgical services setting; Knowledge of surgical instrumentation, sterilization processes, infection prevention, aseptic technique, and healthcare safety standards; Strong organizational, communication, and computer skills; Ability to lift, move, and organize laboratory equipment and supplies and perform the physical requirements associated with laboratory preparation. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related discipline; Teaching, laboratory instruction, or clinical education experience; Experience with simulation-based education and learning management systems such as Canvas; Familiarity with accreditation standards for Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing education programs.
