Job Description

Trocaire College invites applications for part-time adjunct faculty to teach courses within its Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (ASAC) educational program. Instruction is delivered in accordance with New York State OASAS educational standards.

Courses may be offered in-person, online, or in a hybrid format depending on program needs. We seek experienced addiction professionals who are committed to preparing the next generation of substance use disorder counselors through engaging, student-centered instruction grounded in evidence-based practice, ethics, and professional excellence.

This is a pooled posting, and positions are filled on an as-needed basis.

Primary Functions

  • Teach assigned Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counseling courses in accordance with New York State OASAS educational requirements, College-defined learning objectives, and approved course materials.
  • Deliver instruction in advanced addiction counseling topics, which may include assessment and screening, diagnostic formulation, treatment planning, counseling theories and techniques, motivational interviewing, group counseling, trauma-informed care, co-occurring disorders, medication for addiction treatment (MAT), recovery-oriented systems of care, relapse prevention, ethics, clinical supervision, cultural humility, professional development, and other topics consistent with the curriculum.
  • Integrate current evidence-based practices, New York State regulations, and emerging trends in addiction treatment into classroom instruction.
  • Develop course content, assignments, case studies, learning activities, and assessments that permit measurement of student performance relative to established course learning objectives.
  • Maintain and contribute to an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative learning environment that promotes professional growth and ethical practice.
  • Employ the College's learning management system (LMS) and adhere to sound instructional practices, including maintaining a published syllabus, communicating course expectations, holding office hours as appropriate, and regularly reporting grades.
  • Submit attendance and midterm/final grades into the student information system within required timeframes.
  • Provide timely responses and academic support to guide student learning and success throughout the semester through email, office hours, and/or the Trocaire College LMS.
  • Track and report student learning outcome assessment data as assigned.
  • Build positive relationships with students, identify strategies to support academic success, and encourage professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct expected of addiction counseling professionals.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty development activities, and program assessment initiatives as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in Addiction Studies, Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Human Services, Behavioral Health, or a closely related field.
  • Current New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) credential at the Advanced or Master level in good standing.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in substance use disorder treatment, behavioral health, counseling, clinical supervision, program administration, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of current evidence-based practices, New York State OASAS regulations, ethical standards, and best practices in addiction counseling.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written communication, and time-management skills.
  • Commitment to the Mercy mission of Trocaire College and a desire to support diverse and inclusive learning environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in higher education, workforce development, or professional training programs.
  • Experience delivering instruction in online, hybrid, or technology-enhanced learning environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more specialty areas, including co-occurring disorders, trauma-informed care, medication for addiction treatment (MAT), motivational interviewing, adolescent treatment, criminal justice populations, recovery support services, or clinical supervision.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and underserved communities.
  • Experience using learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, or other instructional technologies.
  • Knowledge of New York State OASAS educational standards, credentialing requirements, and workforce development initiatives.
