The Lead Doctoral Faculty Mentor (LDFM) supports doctoral students/candidates as they complete their Dissertation in Practice (DiP) for the EdD program. The LDFM assumes responsibility for providing the doctoral student with constructive feedback on performance related to DiP content and process in a scaffolded manner over the course of five semesters. Reporting to the EdD Program Director and the LDFM Leadership Team, the LDFM ensures that the doctoral student/candidate designs a feasible study and executes a quality applied

research dissertation.

The LDFM is responsible for mentoring the student over 5-6 semesters beginning in the second year of the student’s program. The LDFM will work with doctoral students/candidates in semesters 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 of their program, with most journeys culminating in semester 8 with their DiP presentations. This is a year-round program with continuous support. The LDFM will also be responsible for submitting administrative forms and paperwork in a timely manner to document student progress, guiding the student through chapter design and development, and work collaboratively with teaching faculty in each semester.

LDFMs are responsible for attending live virtual training sessions semesterly and reviewing the mentoring and coaching modules on Marymount’s LMS, Canvas, asynchronously. While this is a stipend position culminating in $2000 distributed over the course of mentorship, this truly is an act of service,

giving back and being part of an academic community.

By joining the LDFM program, one is not only working with an assigned mentee, but also joining a community of scholars committed to engaging in continuous professional development opportunities to enhance technical, managerial, emotional (Roberts et al., 2019), and cognitive components of mentoring doctoral students while contributing to published research. By applying and pursuing the additional interview steps, it adds your name to a pool that is reviewed each time there is a cohort match. As we highly personalize the matching experience, we look for a breadth of candidates that may meet the individual student's needs present in our organization on a variety of factors.

We look for LDFM Candidates who:

● Have completed a 5-Chapter Dissertation

● Are active researchers and practitioners in a specific field of study

● Are dedicated to building upon and expanding mentorship practices

● Are pursuing this opportunity to give back to the academic community

Primary Responsibilities 

• Attend live training sessions

• Review semester modules and action items in the LDFM Canvas LMS course

  Coach the doctoral student in identifying an appropriate problem of practice to study

  Guide the student in conducting a relevant and comprehensive literature review

  Advise the student as they identify and develop an appropriate research design and methodology

• Provide support to the student in the writing and submission of their IRB application

• Meet (virtually/in-person) with the student with increasing scalability each semester to establish and follow a dissertation timeline and provide support, feedback, and guidance on respective sections to promote progress

• Provide constructive feedback on submitted documents from doctoral student/candidates in a timely manner

• Recommend resources to support doctoral candidates with writing, research, and analysis, as needed

• Communicate and liaise with Education faculty and additional committee member(s) on progress and to assist in scheduling the dissertation presentation

• Submit required administrative forms each semester to formally document student progression in the program

Required Qualifications 

• Earned doctorate in related field

• Published or have experience working with students who have published the 5-chapter dissertation model

• Established publication and presentation record

• Research and academic writing skills

• Strong familiarity with APAStrong data analysis skills (qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed methods)

• Excellent communication, planning, editing, and organization skillsEffective mentorship and coaching skills, including the ability to provide constructive feedback

• Attention to detail and ability to meet administrative deadlines

Compensation/Benefits 

LDFM Adjuncts receive remuneration based on the number of students mentored, and may range from $600 - 1,800 per semester.  They may make their own contribution to a 403b retirement plan.
