Associate Director (AD): Responsible for the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of U.S. Medical Information (MI) assets and serves as a Medical Reviewer on the Human Pharma Review Committee (HPRC), supporting MLR review of U.S. medical and promotional communications. Partners with Medical Affairs Strategy and Global MI to deliver accurate, scientifically balanced, and globally aligned content that meets customer and regulatory requirements. Ensures reviewed materials are scientifically sound, compliant, and consistent with FDA regulations and current medical standards while supporting processes, knowledge management, compliance, and cross-functional initiatives. Primary support includes the Cardio-Renal-Metabolism (CRM) portfolio, including obesity, liver disease, and chronic kidney disease (CKD), with additional therapeutic areas assigned as needed. 

Senior Associate Director (SAD): In addition to AD responsibilities, the SAD provides leadership and advanced MI and Medical Review(MR) expertise. The SAD proactively contributes to and ensures alignment with medical and brand strategies, and drives continuous process and system improvement based on evolving customer needs.  

Duties & Responsibilities

Planning:  

• Plans and prioritizes MI response content using customer inquiries, emerging evidence, and external trends, and provides actionable insights to inform cross-functional medical and business strategies. 
• Applies medical review expertise early in content planning to advise project owners on material feasibility and provide solution-oriented guidance that supports submission of scientifically accurate, appropriately contextualized, and approvable content to HPRC. 

  
Response Content Management:  

• Develops and reviews Medical Information response content for external customers, including FAQs, Standard Scientific Response Content (SSRCs), customized responses, dossiers, and related training resources.  
• Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including Global Medical Information, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Patient Safety & Pharmacovigilance and other externally facing functions to ensure consistent and accurate communication of medical information.  
• Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation of review activities, including tracking changes and providing feedback to stakeholders.  
• Provides medical training and support to the contact center and internal stakeholders, including sales representatives and medical affairs teams.  

  
Medical Review:  

• Reviews and provides medical and scientific expertise to ensure the accuracy, clarity, and compliance of promotional and non-promotional materials, including marketing materials, medical communications, educational content, sales aids, and training materials.  
• Verifies the integrity and appropriate interpretation of data and ensures content aligns with clinical evidence, current product information, disease-state knowledge, regulatory requirements, and internal standards. 
• Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including medical affairs strategy, marketing, sales, legal, regulatory affairs, and operations to provide medical input and guidance throughout the review process.  

  
Overall Medical Expertise and Support:  

• Maintains a comprehensive understanding of product information, clinical data, relevant medical and scientific advancements, regulatory guidelines, and industry best practices.  

  
Compliance:  

• Performs Company business in accordance with regulations (e.g.  FDA, PhRMA Guidelines, etc.) and Company policies and procedures. 
• Demonstrates high ethical and professional standards with all customers to maintain the Company’s reputation within the medical and pharmaceutical community.  

  
Training and Special Activities:  

• Builds internal awareness of MI MR group for cross-functional partners.  
• Works collaboratively with Medicine Excellence colleagues to support vendor training.  
• Supports quality, training, and innovation for department core functions.  
• May participate in relevant external activities (e.g., DIA, PhactMI) to enhance individual and Boehringer Ingelheim reputation for excellence.

Requirements

AD Requirements:

• Advanced Degree Related to Healthcare focus (e.g., PharmD, NP/PA, MD, PhD) from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a clinical practice environment (including Residency training) as well as three-plus (3+) years of industry experience, preferably with experience in development and/ or medical affairs.
• At least three to five (3-5) years pharmaceutical industry experience or completion of a two-year Boehringer Fellowship program (in MI or equivalent as defined by medical information expertise).
• Possesses clinical knowledge of the assigned TA(s), understanding of the clinical development process, medical affairs functions, product commercialization, and pharmaceutical regulations and regulatory requirements.
• International experience may be relevant but knowledge and experience with US MI practice is essential.
• Must have experience in supervision of staff across medical information and third-party vendors and ensure compliance with existing SOPs, policies, and work instructions.
• Demonstrated customer focus and customer satisfaction as well as demonstrated continuous improvement of processes/assets.
• Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally at the franchise level and at all levels across the enterprise.

Additional SAD Requirements:

• Advanced Degree Related to Healthcare focus (e.g., PharmD, NP/PA, MD, PhD) from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a clinical practice environment (including Residency training) as well three-plus (3+) years of industry experience, preferably with experience in development and/ or medical affairs.
• At least seven (7) years pharmaceutical industry experience (in MI or equivalent as defined by medical information expertise).

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
• Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
• Must be 18 years of age or older.

Compensation

This position offers a base salary typically between $165,600 and $248,400 for AD level and $196,000 and $294,000 for Sr AD level.  The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance based bonus and or other compensation elements.  For an overview of our benefits please click here.
