Role Summary

The Activities Assistant helps develop and deliver a comprehensive program of recreational and therapeutic activities designed to meet the individual interests and needs of Skilled Nursing residents. Working alongside the Activity Director and interdisciplinary team, this position promotes residents’ physical, mental, social, and psychosocial well-being.

Schedule Details

Activities are provided at various times throughout the day and evening, seven days a week.

Schedule requires weekends and up to three evenings per week.

Holiday schedule will be determined by management.

Responsibilities

Compliance with rules and regulations of all federal, state, and local governments is a requirement of employment.

Participates in the development of the plan of treatment.

Participates in team and interdisciplinary conferences as needed.

Plans constructively with resident and family to restore resident to optimum capacity through recreational activities.

Provides, in conjunction with activity director, an organized on‐going program of meaningful activities designed to meet the interest, physical, mental, and psychosocial well‐being of each resident in accordance with the comprehensive resident assessment.

Promotes/maintains resident's sense of usefulness to self/others, stimulates and supports desire to use his/her physical/mental capabilities to fullest extent, and enables resident to maintain sense of usefulness and self‐respect.

Implements a planned program of activities to include group/independent programs for all residents at various times of day and evening, seven days a week, which requires weekends and up to three evenings per week. (Holiday schedule will be determined by management.)

Assists in the development of a care plan for each resident.

Assists Director of Activities in efforts to orient, train, and supervise volunteers.

Keeps Activity Director informed of problems, needs, and resident progress.

Attends meetings as required such as committee meetings and resident care conferences.

Maintains appropriate department records and files.

Assumes other responsibilities as required, reasonably related.

Keeps informed of fire, safety, and disaster programs.

Attends designated inservice programs.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

Experience in healthcare working directly with individuals preferred.

Long-term care experience preferred.

Experience in a service field including, but not limited to, sociology, special education, rehabilitation counseling, or psychology preferred.

Experience or knowledge in therapeutic recreation and rehabilitation/volunteer services preferred.

Act 34 Clearance (criminal background check) required.

Skills

Ability to conduct oral presentations and provide teaching for groups and individuals.

Ability to interact effectively with individuals across different ages, social backgrounds, and economic levels.

Strong concentration and organizational skills.

Ability to multitask and independently plan and organize work.

Compensation

Compensation is based on experience and organizational compensation guidelines.

Additional Notes

Provides direct care to patients/residents and interacts with family members when needed.

Scope of resident care includes individuals age 18 through elderly, regardless of age, race, religion, or cultural background.

Majority of services are provided to elderly residents.

Frequently exposed to disagreeable sights, sounds, odors, body waste, and other clinical conditions.

Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, other tissues, and communicable diseases.

Considerable walking, standing, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and sitting required.

Occasionally required to push, move, and/or lift objects weighing up to 60 pounds.

Occasionally required to push, move, and/or lift 100+ pounds.

Potential for eye/back strain and musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.

Frequent contact with visitors, community agency representatives, and other healthcare-related organizations.

Daily contact with clients at all levels, including managers and employees.

Caregivers are expected to actively participate in quality improvement processes, including identifying opportunities for improvement, collecting and organizing quality measurement data, and participating on Quality Teams.
