Job Description:

ATA Services, Inc. is currently seeking to hire an Abstractor to work on a contract with our company.

Pay Rate: $50.00

The Maternal Health Program (MHP) of the New Mexico Department of Health has an immediate opening for a contractor to fulfill the role of Records Abstractor for the NM Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC). Average hours will be approximately 16 per week but variable depending on the number of cases to be abstracted. Hourly rate will be based on experience.

The MMRC reviews the death of every New Mexico resident that occurs during pregnancy or within one year of the end of a pregnancy. The goals are to determine if the cause of death is pregnancy related, to identify contributing factors to the death, and to make recommendations to prevent such deaths from occurring.

The role of the Abstractor is to comprehensively select and extract pertinent information from medical records and an array of other sources to accurately capture the events leading up to and including each death in the form of a case summary that is used by the MMRC to make its determinations.

Given the critical role of the abstractor and the sensitivity of the variables that impact maternal mortality, the MHP is actively seeking an abstractor that can apply a well-rounded, uninfluenced view on the case load with the overall goal to have their abstraction assist MMRC members in case reviews.

Specific duties include the following:

• Accept assignments from the Lead Abstractor and assist in the identification of needed records to be requested by the MMRC Coordinator and contractors.

• Extract pertinent information from all available records and enter it into the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) data system.

• Construct comprehensive, objective, narrative case summaries from the information entered into MMRIA.

• Assist with identifying key informants who may consent to an interview.

• Attend operational staff and MMRC case review meetings to provide additional support and information as appropriate to MMRC members during the case reviews.

• Participate in ongoing training opportunities identified by DOH and CDC related to job duties, health equity, implicit bias, and maintain certification in HIPAA compliance.

• Maintain high levels of accuracy, attention to detail, and internal consistency across data fields and narrative summaries.

• Identify missing, contradictory, or unclear documentation and flag gaps requiring follow-up or clarification.

Ideal Candidate has:

1. Nursing or other clinical experience in obstetrics, antenatal, and postpartum care with an understanding of normal/abnormal processes of pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum and the wide spectrum of factors that can influence maternal outcomes;

2. A strong commitment to health equity and an understanding of the drivers of inequity;

3. A deep working knowledge of and/or lived experience with NM communities of color;

4. Prior experience with Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) or comparable public health abstraction platforms (e.g., disease surveillance systems, mortality review databases, quality reporting tools).

5. Strong, professional communication and organization skills;

6. Computer skills, including data entry experience and ability to navigate a variety of electronic medical record systems;

7. Experience with medical record review (peer review, other mortality review, etc.) to gather and extract relevant information;

8. Flexibility and ability to accomplish tasks in short time frames;

9. Knowledge of HIPAA and other confidentiality laws; and

10. Interest in collaborating as a member of a multidisciplinary team to serve as an objective, unbiased storyteller.
