About the Role

Asphalt Green is seeking experienced and dependable AAU Head Basketball Coaches to support competitive youth basketball programming at Battery Park City. 

The AAU Head Basketball Coach is responsible for developing players’ basketball skills, preparing athletes for competition, leading organized practices, supporting game-day performance, and creating a positive, disciplined, and respectful team culture. This role works closely with the Director of Player Development, assistant coaches, players, parents, and program leadership to ensure athletes have a safe, structured, and development-focused experience. 

The ideal candidate has competitive basketball experience, prior coaching experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to support player growth both on and off the court.

What You’ll Do

Basketball Instruction and Player Development 

Develop players’ fundamental basketball skills and game understanding to prepare them for competition. 

Design and lead organized, efficient, and purposeful practices that address individual and team needs. 

Teach basketball fundamentals, rules, strategies, terminology, and game concepts. 

Support player development, skill progression, confidence, accountability, and work ethic. 

Develop and implement effective game plans. 

Make in-game adjustments that support player growth and team performance. 

Help athletes understand team expectations, systems, and standards. 

Team Culture and Participant Experience 

Foster a positive, disciplined, and respectful team culture. 

Emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, effort, accountability, and respect. 

Serve as a positive role model for players on and off the court. 

Encourage personal growth, leadership, and responsibility. 

Supervise player behavior and conduct during practices, games, travel, and team activities. 

Help ensure a safe, inclusive, and development-focused environment for all players. 

Program and Coaching Team Support 

Coordinate with the Director of Player Development to align systems, terminology, and expectations. 

Work closely with assistant coaches to support player safety, team structure, and a positive program environment. 

Maintain clear and respectful communication with players, parents, coaching staff, and program directors. 

Attend coaches meetings, trainings, and other scheduled program events. 

Support and follow Asphalt Green program policies and procedures. 

Embody Asphalt Green’s mission and values.

A successful AAU Head Basketball Coach will: 

Lead structured and purposeful practices. 

Help players improve basketball fundamentals, game understanding, and confidence. 

Prepare players for competition through clear instruction and strong practice planning. 

Build a team culture rooted in sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and respect. 

Communicate clearly with players, families, assistant coaches, and program leadership. 

Make thoughtful game-day adjustments that support player growth and team performance. 

Maintain a safe and positive environment during practices, games, and travel. 

Follow Asphalt Green’s policies, procedures, and program expectations. 

Serve as a strong role model for youth athletes.

Who You’ll Work With

The AAU Head Basketball Coach works closely with the Director of Player Development, assistant coaches, Sports Department leadership, players, parents, families, and other Asphalt Green staff. 

This role may also collaborate with game officials, league representatives, tournament staff, and facility staff during practices, games, and competitions. 
QualificationsRequired Qualifications 

You’ll need: 

Prior coaching experience at the club, high school, or collegiate level. 

Competitive basketball playing experience at the club, high school, collegiate, or professional level. 

Deep understanding of basketball fundamentals, rules, and regulations. 

Ability to develop game plans and adjust strategies during games. 

Experience with player development and skill progression. 

Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 

Ability to foster a positive, disciplined, respectful, and team-focused environment. 

Ability to supervise youth athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities. 

Ability to work two weekday evenings after 4:30 PM, one weekday afternoon, and select weekends for league play. 

Ability to attend required coaches meetings, trainings, and program events. 

Ability to become USA coaching certified upon hire, paid for by Asphalt Green. 

Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role with or without reasonable accommodation. 

Preferred Qualifications 

It would be helpful if you also have: 

Prior AAU basketball coaching experience. 

Experience coaching youth athletes in a competitive team environment. 

Experience working with assistant coaches or supporting a coaching staff. 

Experience communicating with parents and families in a youth sports setting. 

Experience supporting travel teams, league play, tournaments, or competitive youth basketball programming. 

Strong practice planning, player evaluation, and team management skills. 

CPR/AED or First Aid certification. 

Bilingual or multilingual language skills. 

Season Schedule and Work Environment

This is a part-time, in-person role based at Asphalt Green’s Battery Park City location. 

The expected schedule includes two weekday evenings after 4:30 PM, one weekday afternoon, and select weekends for league play from October–March. The season runs from September 15 through March 15. Select games, league play, meetings, trainings, or program events may require additional availability. 

The work environment includes basketball courts, athletic spaces, team practice areas, game sites, tournament settings, travel environments, and other program spaces. 

Physical Requirements

This role may require the ability to: 

Stand, walk, bend, reach, demonstrate movements, and remain active for extended periods. 

Demonstrate basketball skills, drills, techniques, and movements. 

Communicate clearly in active and sometimes noisy athletic environments. 

Supervise youth athletes during practices, games, travel, and team activities. 

Respond quickly to player needs, safety concerns, or changing game situations. 

Set up, move, or organize light sports equipment. 

Work in gym, athletic, travel, game, and tournament environments.
