LEAD Program Summary: The UW-Stevens Point LEAD Program was first implemented on the UWSP campus in the 2021-2022 school year and is completely FREE to eligible students. LEAD is designed to increase first-year undergraduate and first-generation college students’ sense of belonging at UWSP before the school year even begins. The program kicks off with a summer bridge week in August one week prior to classes and continues throughout the entire first year on campus, by providing students with ongoing resources, peer mentoring, programming, and professional support opportunities. The program is aimed at providing a supportive community that promotes student success by getting first-year undergraduate students ahead and ready to start their college careers. It focuses on campus resources, transitioning into college, student success skills, social and enrichment activities, and the development of future campus leaders. 

SET Department Mission: The Office of Student Experience and Transformation (SET) aims to provide support to pre-college and college students who need help with their transition to the UWSP campus community. SET serves as a welcoming campus resource that provides academically and culturally integrated transformative experiences. SET empowers student development, connects first-generation students, and celebrates all students’ lived experiences and campus communities. 

SET Department Vision: To foster transformative learning through integrated, holistic, and human-centered community experiences. 

LEAD Peer Mentor Responsibilities: 

• Interact with incoming 2026-2027 LEAD cohort - approximately 60-100 first-year, low-income and/or first-generation students during the week before the Fall 2026 semester. 

• Serve as an assigned peer mentor and meet with regularly up to 10 individual incoming LEAD students throughout the 2026-2027 academic year. 

• Attend all meetings and mandatory trainings/orientation before the program begins, as well as mandatory monthly staff meetings throughout the academic year.  

• Plan, prep, attend, and escort students to regularly scheduled recreational activities and trips. 

• Facilitate and lead both small and large group discussions. 

• Uphold required procedures and enforce program and University rules. 

• Respond to medical emergencies and manage unexpected occurrences. 

• Demonstrate responsible leadership to ensure program goals are met.

2026-2027 LEAD Schedule: 

• SET Department & LEAD Mentor Orientation: Spring 2026 – 2-3 Hours, In Person on Campus, April/May 

• Mandatory Trainings #2-4: 1-3 Hours Each, Summer 2026, In Person OR Via Zoom 

• 1 Training Each Month: June, July & Early-Mid August  

• LEAD Summer Bridge Program Week: Saturday, August 22nd – Friday, August 28th, 2026 

• Saturday, August 22nd – Peer Mentor Move-In & LEAD Check-In Set Up  

• Sunday, August 23rd – Final LEAD Mentor Training, LEAD Student Check-In/Move-In, & Orientation  

• Monday, August 24th – Thursday, August 27th – LEAD Week Presentations & Activities 

• Friday, August 28th – Mt. Olympus Water Park Trip  

• 2026-2027 Academic Year: Up to 5 Hours per Week 

• Minimum of 1 Hour per Week In-Person @ Student Success Center   

• Mandatory Monthly Staff Meetings – 2-3 Hours  

• Expected to attend all LEAD Dinners, Career & Department Events throughout the academic year   

LEAD Peer Mentor Required Qualifications: 

• Must be available to work the full duration of the program. 

• Must be enrolled at least part-time (*6 credits or more) for both 2026-2027 Fall/Spring Semesters. 

• Sophomore standing or higher. 

• Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. 

• Knowledgeable about UWSP Campus (Academic resources, residential life, campus activities, etc.). 

• Demonstrate a level of maturity and responsibility. 

• Ability to work independently with students in one-on-one, small groups, and large group settings. 

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team. 

• Willingness to learn and communicate new information to others. 

• Ability to address sensitive concerns of students and parents professionally, tactfully, and confidentially. 

• Ability to motivate and encourage others. 

• Flexible, outgoing, personable personality. 

• Flexibility to adapt quickly to last-minute schedule changes and/or pivots in planning.    

LEAD Peer Mentor Preferred Qualifications: 

• Identifies as a student of color, LGBTQ+ self-identifying students, low-income, and/or first-generation students. 

• Experience working as a camp counselor, mentor/coach, or a similar leadership role.  

• Knowledge of SET Department, Programs, Staff, Operations, Resources, Student Success Center, etc. 

• Has working knowledge of trauma-informed care practices OR willingness to learn.   

• Knowledge of residence hall policy/experience enforcing policy. 

• Certification in first aid, CPR, and emergency procedures. 

• Experience with end-to-end planning, marketing, and coordinating events. 

• Experience with Canva or other design software OR willing to learn.   

LEAD Peer Mentor Role Specific Responsibilities & Expectations:  

*Required - All to meet general peer mentor expectations as stated above, all attend LEAD Week, all to support other duties as assigned to meet program and student needs outside the responsibilities listed below.  

• Graduate Intern 

• Summer - Flexible based on credits/need - likely 10-30 hours per week 

• *Requested – closer to 20-30+ hours per week, if possible  

• Summer focus 

• Support managing LEAD mentee applications/data + outreach/marketing to incoming cohort.   

• Support coordination/planning of LEAD week (outreach to presenters, determine scheduling, etc.)   

• Support matching mentors and mentees once cohort is finalized. 

• Create/design marketing/print materials for LEAD week. 

• Support coordination/planning of LEAD Peer Mentor Training schedule. 

• Coordinate Navigate & DOS Trainings for LEAD Peer Mentors.   

• Order LEAD week supplies, stuff backpacks, and other duties as assigned to prep adequately for LEAD Week  

• Attend LEAD Week and help support the flow, coordination and logistics for the week. 

• Schoolyear - Flexible based on credits/need - likely 8-20 hours per week 

• Fall focus  

• Assist with completing student 1:1 check-in meetings 

• Coordinate training and outreach to both LEAD mentees and peer mentors to ensure support and resources.  

• Create/design programming specific to a proactive approach to supporting mental health and engaging in strength-based, trauma-informed care. 

• Spring focus 

• Work with ACAC to plan spring career exploration dinner and related resume/job/interview events.  

• Continue 1:1 meetings with LEAD students as needed. 

• Continue to support mental health programming.  

• Help update/coordinate/manage spring LEAD peer mentor applications and LEAD student cohort applications 

• Senior LEAD Peer Mentor (Up to 10 hours per week during school year)  

• *Can only apply for this role if student served as a LEAD Peer Mentor for at least one previous year  

• Assist with one-on-one check ins w/LEAD mentees.  

• Facilitate SET/LEAD departmental school year events (1-4 per year).  

• Coordinate tabling and marketing opportunities.  

• Co-manages LEAD photo library & department slideshows. 

• LEAD Ambassador – outreach, connection and engagement w/other campus departments  

• *Will partner with Outreach/Engagement Peer Mentor to determine engagement workload and capacity.  

• Summer Focus 

• *Approximately 5-20 hours per week, flexibility w/remote v. in person (*Some tasks MAY need to be completed in person)  

• Continue supporting managing LEAD mentee applications/data + marketing/outreach to incoming cohort.   

• Support coordination/planning of LEAD week (outreach to presenters, determine scheduling, etc.)

• Fostering Success / LEAD Dual Eligibility Support Peer Mentor (Up to 10 hours per week during school year)  

• All the same responsibilities as any other peer mentor; however, this staff will be the designated point person supporting our LEAD students who are also eligible for the Fostering Success Program.  

• Support Fostering Success peer coaches in event planning, coordination and marketing/outreach/engagement efforts.  

• *May need to participate in additional trainings/workshops.  

• Event Planner # 1 (Up to 5 hours per week during schoolyear)  

• Designs and coordinates end-to-end management of all planning details for monthly workshops, social events, and community-building activities. 

• Organizes small group meetups, coffee chats, and peer circles. 

• Working alongside LEAD Program Coordinator, takes lead on planning LEAD’s large scale departmental events (*typically 1-2 each semester)  

• Co-manages LEAD photo library & department slideshows.  

• Prepare materials needed prior to upcoming events. 

• *Will partner with Outreach/Engagement, PR/Graphic Designer, and Social Media Peer Mentors to ensure clear lines of communication and end-to-end event management.  

•  Event Planner #2 (*Same responsibilities and weekly hours as #1)  

•  Social Media (Up to 5 hours per week during school year) 

• Create/maintain current social media accounts. 

• Post upcoming events, flyers, fun videos, etc.  

• Create infographics and bite sized informational fliers.  

• Co-manages LEAD photo library & department slideshows. 

• Track engagement statistics.   

• *Will partner with Outreach/Engagement, PR/Graphic Designer, and Event Planner Peer Mentors to ensure clear lines of communication and end-to-end event management. 

•  Public Relations (PR) / Graphic Designer (Up to 5 hours per week during schoolyear) 

• Create flyers for upcoming events.  

• Distribute the flyers – make sure they get posted to all buildings and shared with all LEAD students and LEAD Peer Mentors (especially social media mentor).   

• Inputs events into SPIN, Student Message of Day, Navigate, etc.  

• *Will partner with Outreach/Engagement, Social Media, and Event Planner Peer Mentors to ensure clear lines of communication and end-to-end event management. 

• Outreach/Community Engagement (Up to 5 hours per week during schoolyear) 

• Consistently outreach/remind LEAD cohort about campus resources, required meetings, events/programming, check ins, and any other resources deemed beneficial for students.  

• Reminders about advising/etc.  

• Work closely with the event planners to ensure clear lines of communication and end-to-end management of events.  

• Highlight community events. 

• Maintain existing campus relationships as well as outreach, grow, and innovate new campus partnerships.  

• *Will partner with Senior LEAD Peer Mentor to determine engagement workload and capacity. 

• Burroughs Themed Community Experience Liaison (Up to 5 hours per week during schoolyear) 

• RA (*if hired) OR regular peer mentor.  

• Holds regular weekly office hours in Burroughs Lobby.  

• Consistently communicates with RA’s and discusses LEAD Themed Community Experience (TCE) problems/challenges AND highlights positive/community building. 

• Communicates with LEAD Program Coordinator and brainstorms/problem solves should there be TCE issues/concerns.    

• Coordinate with RA’s & Burroughs Hall Director to schedule at least one LEAD focused TCE floor meeting per semester, approximately at the 8-week/halfway point  

• Fall Semester - Late October; *Week 8 or 9 

• Spring Semester – Late March or early April 

• *After spring break, Week 9 or 10 

• Alternate/Float (Up to 5 hours per week during schoolyear; Summer hours flexible and based on employee availability and program needs) 

• *May or may not be assigned LEAD mentees initially for Bridge Week.  

• Support LEAD Week planning throughout summer as needed.  

• Lead mentee groups during LEAD Week in the absence of other mentors, RA’s, and/or as needed.  

• Transition into full LEAD mentor role for any peer mentors who may resign during the school year 

• Provide seamless transition of care in supporting mentees who may need to be reassigned.  

• Holds a minimum of one (1) SSC office hour per week during the school year.  

• “Float” Responsibilities:  

• Support any/all gap areas of the LEAD program, including working with other peer mentors, LEAD Graduate Intern, Senior LEAD Peer Mentor and/or LEAD Program Coordinator.  

• Support SSS, Upward Bound, and/or SET Departmental tasks throughout the school year as needed.  

• Any/all other duties assigned.
