This position provides support and advocacy services to families enrolled in the program, acting as a
liaison between families, the program staff, and the wider community. Assist families identify needs,
connect with resources, and achieve their goals, fostering a positive and supportive environment for
children and families.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Primary Responsibilities:
Assess families’ needs, develop individualized plans, and connect them with relevant resources
Encourage, facilitate, and work with staff to ensure parental involvement in activities and events,
including field trips, workshops, and meetings to build a strong partnership between families and the
program.
Serve as a liaison between families, program staff, and other professionals, ensuring effective
communication and collaboration.
Recruit, interview, and enroll children and families into the program.
Assign children to classrooms and prepare rosters.
Handles the following screenings: Health, Growth, Development, Blood Pressure, and vision and
hearing.
Ensure that all identified children receive medical and/or dental treatment
Provide health/mental health education to children, parents, and staff.
Assist staff with children who require medical attention when necessary.
Assist in obtaining information for children with suspected disabilities.
Works with staff to assist parents in developing community projects.
Maintain regular communication with parents while assisting and supporting them as they move
toward self-sufficiency.
Handles the record keeping for children’s files, health data tracking system, family partner
agreements, nutrition assessments, parent surveys, referrals, health summaries.
Maintain accurate records of family interactions, assessments, referrals, and prepare reports as
required.
Maintains attendance records to ensure that funded enrollment is maintained.
Maintains and develops resource network.
Refers and follows up with any community agencies.

Ensure that the Center Parent Committees are established and operating throughout the school
year.
Participate in staff, child, and family study team process.
Assist with annual program assessment
Assists with center emergencies such as center closing, sick children, or evacuation.
Assists with classroom and other center coverage as needed.
Attend field trips and provided first aid if necessary.
Remain with children left after school when needed.
Required to travel to family homes or community centers at least twice per year.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Satisfactory completion of mandatory trainings.
Attend training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
Additional duties as assigned.
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED
Three (3) years’ experience in Family Service or Social Work
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Family Service or Social Work
Two (2) years’ experience of similar work.
Head Start/Early Head Start experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of child and family health care
Familiar with Head Start program standards and regulations.
Ability to build rapport and effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
Passion for working with children to create a positive learning environment.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential.
Must be flexible and able to adjust to changing circumstances.
Communicate with parents, build partnerships and involve families in the child’s learning.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Physical Demands:
Active listening, writing, and verbal communication skills.
Must have hand-eye coordination to write and type.
Must be able to tolerate loud to moderate noise.
Prolonged sitting.
Ability to lift/move up to 25 pounds

The CAO is a community-based, citizen-driven organization founded in 1965 as part of our nation’s “war on poverty” and provides essential health & human services, educational and training programs to the poor, low-income citizens of Erie County, NY. The CAO serves the community through their network of more than 50 locations throughout Erie County. Through this network, CAO runs more than 50 children and family, crisis and emergency, neighborhood, employment and training, housing and development, drug and community technology programs and services. Our mission is to promote opportunities for low-income families and individuals to achieve and sustain self-sufficiency through advocacy, partnerships and services.
Each year we help more than 21,000 individuals and 9,000 families gain access to programs or services that might otherwise have not been available. The CAO also operates four resource centers in the city of Buffalo; the JFK Community Center, the Edward Saunders Community Center, the Pratt-Willert Community Center and the CAO Alphonso “Rafi” Greene Jr. Masten Resource Center. In addition, we operate a community resource center in Angola, NY. St. Martin Village, a 60 unit low-income housing complex at the site of what was once the German Roman Catholic Orphanage, is a recent addition to the CAO, and a community resource site which opened in 2012. We also initiated the Home Improvement Resource Program (HIRP) in 2012 and to date have provided millions of dollars in home improvement and weatherization resources to the community. In 2016, we also expanded our Head Start program to include three sites located within Niagara County.
