Moving out of your parents’ home in your late teens or early 20s is seen as a rite of passage in the US and other (mostly Western) countries that value individualism and independence.
However, these days, more and more young adults in the US aren’t able to do that, mostly because it’s gotten too expensive.
Many people are worried about this. 13 In a Pew Research Center report, 36% of respondents said they think that the trend of living at home in adulthood is bad for society, while just 16% say it’s good. There’s still a stigma around failing to move out at 18.
But is living at home really that bad, or is it a sensible financial strategy to survive in an economy that’s getting more and more brutal? Is the cultural expectation that young people will move out due for an overhaul?
