If you asked most people 10 years ago to name a career that was safe from automation, chances are many would have said coding or software development.
When other workers—often those with blue collar or retail positions—worried about their jobs being automated, one response from developers that often trended on social media was “learn to code.”
As of 2026, the tables have turned. Software development jobs are becoming increasingly reliant on AI, and Anthropic recently named computer programming as one of the jobs most at risk from AI.
Blue-collar workers even came up with their own retort: “learn to weld.”
A lot of employed developers are now being told to integrate AI into their workflows and feel like their jobs may be in jeopardy. Freelancers are in a more vulnerable position.
Side Hustles looked at how this technology is reshaping the industry and whether freelance software development is still a viable path in the age of AI.
