The US is in the midst of mass layoffs. According to Business Insider, over 100 companies, including big names like Amazon, eBay, and Pinterest, have announced plans to cut jobs in 2026.
Corporate leaders say that AI is automating many of the jobs previously done by humans. Jack Dorsey, CEO of the American tech company Block, announced that they’re cutting around 40% of their workforce, citing “intelligence tools” as the reason.
But while CEOs cite artificial intelligence as the reason for the ongoing layoffs, critics have accused companies of “AI-washing,” claiming that they’re using technology as a scapegoat.
While it’s undeniable that AI has had an impact on thousands of jobs in 2026, just how big a role has it had in the mass layoffs? Are neural networks really outperforming humans, or is AI a convenient excuse for why so many Americans are now out of work?
