For Dana, a Missouri-based registered nurse (RN), checking her phone at 5:00 AM to find out if a hospital shift she claimed days ago is still available is a regular part of her routine.
She gets most of these shifts through CareRev, a gig app that some people have dubbed the “Uber for Nurses.” However, her experience using it has been a decidedly mixed bag, largely due to the unreliability of the work it offers.
“It’s a gamble,” she told the Roosevelt Institute, an economic think tank that often reports on gig work.6 “The only reason that I’m doing this right now is because I have no choice.”
Across town, Jackie Siener—another veteran RN and former CareRev user—has had a very different (and more positive) experience with nursing gig apps. She told Side Hustles that they allow her to claim shifts on her own terms and get paid the very next day.
“Who wants to wait two weeks?” she said.
Both nurses live in the same state and use similar gig platforms, but their experiences have been drastically different. If you, like Dana and Siener, are a nurse who’s interested in exploring this type of work, that may leave you nervous about what’s in store for you.
