Anyone who works in a creative industry will tell you things have gotten rough over the past few years. The idea of the “starving artist” is nothing new, but now, creatives face an existential threat from AI.
However, although businesses might be keen to outsource creative tasks—like songwriting, graphic design, and writing—to generative AI, many people, particularly among younger generations, are less enthusiastic. The public’s perception of AI-generated media is trending negative, with people rapidly tiring of AI “slop.”
Gen Z artists are also pushing back, and some are turning to something LLMs aren’t able to produce: physical media.
To satisfy a growing demand for “analog” experiences, some Gen Z artists have started their own “snail mail” businesses, meaning they send physical art pieces to subscribers. Is there longevity in these somewhat retro media businesses and side hustles, or will this trend go the way of the wireless?
