How Viable Is Freelance Transcription on Upwork in 2026?

If you look at Upwork’s official data, you might actually get the impression that the transcription market is thriving.

In its June 2026 Monthly Hiring Insights report, Upwork announced a 19% month-over-month growth in Data Entry & Transcription Services among small and medium-sized businesses.1

But platform-wide hiring data doesn’t necessarily tell you what it feels like to compete for transcription work. Sarah Mason told us that to her, the platform looks bleaker than it did earlier in her career.

The fall of the generalist transcriptionist

Mason, whose Upwork page has the heading Professionally Fast Transcription Services, has been working on the site for more than 15 years and remembers the golden age of transcription.

“Back in 2010, transcription was booming,” Mason told us. “I had so much work that I actually had a team of, at times, 20 transcribers working part-time … we were all constantly busy.”

Today, her situation is very different.

Mason said that she sometimes gets just one new project a month and that the majority of that work consists of fixing transcripts produced by artificial intelligence. “I no longer have a team and am barely able to pay my bills now,” she told us.

Mason attributes the decline primarily to the rise of ChatGPT and other platforms that are capable of producing transcripts with little or no human involvement.

Other factors that affect the transcription market

AI is just one of the factors that have damaged the job market for transcriptionists lately. Some clients are still willing to pay human workers, but that doesn’t always guarantee that freelancers like Mason will get the job.

She said that a few of her former clients have started outsourcing transcription work to offshore providers, who charge much cheaper rates. To these clients, price matters more than transcription quality.

She shared an example involving a company that transcribes insurance claim calls.

The company’s priority, she said, was not necessarily to produce a polished transcript. The company simply needed a transcript on file to satisfy a legal requirement, regardless of the quality.

“I believe they’d have the transcripts redone if they were needed for court,” she said.

That’s not to say that all transcription has dried up on Upwork.

While AI may have eliminated much of the demand for people to create transcripts from scratch, it has also created a new category of work involving fixing the work AI produces.

That can mean proofreading, correcting speaker identification issues, fixing punctuation, and checking the generated transcript against the original audio.

Upwork itself has pointed to this as evidence that their platform is still a worthwhile marketplace for freelancers. In an August 2026 report, they shared data that indicated that jobs that involved improving AI-generated work grew 70% year over year.2

On paper, these so-called “AI-remediation” jobs sound like a promising new avenue. Unfortunately, in practice, Mason said they aren’t always as attractive as they appear.

The illusion of lucrative AI cleanup jobs

There are a few issues that make AI cleanup jobs less lucrative than they look. First, they’re often described as proofreading or editing jobs, which can command lower rates than traditional transcription work, especially if you’re a beginner with no proven track record to justify higher rates.

Second, although you might expect these jobs to be much easier or quicker—allowing you to make up the difference in volume—that’s not necessarily true. Mason said that bad AI output can take almost as much time to fix as it would to transcribe the recording from scratch (even with her typing speed of 90 wpm).

For that reason, she charges the exact same rate ($1.20 per audio minute) whether she’s transcribing a recording manually or cleaning up an AI-generated transcript.

How transcription pricing works

As a newcomer, it’s important to understand how transcription pricing works. Pay is almost always calculated per hour or minute of recorded audio, not hour worked.

As of the time of writing, for instance, Mason has an ongoing Upwork contract for AI cleanup listed at what appears to be $66 per hour. While that sounds lucrative, that $66 refers to an hour of recorded audio.

As a transcriptionist, a single hour of audio can require multiple hours of listening, corrections, research, and formatting to complete. After accounting for the actual time she spends working, Mason estimates that she earns roughly $28 to $33 per hour of work.

Between the scarcity of work, the potentially tedious nature of AI cleanup, and the lower rates offered to beginners, AI remediation may represent a new source of work, but it isn’t a replacement for the old market, especially if this will be your only source of income.

Upwork itself has become more expensive to use in recent years.

Freelancers on the marketplace use a virtual currency called Connects to submit proposals to jobs. These tokens cost $0.15 each, with some jobs costing dozens of Connects (equivalent to several dollars) to apply.3

“Upwork is definitely charging a lot more than even five years ago,” Mason told us. “They restructured the way their Connects work, and it now costs a lot more to bid for jobs.”

That creates an expensive equation for a transcriptionist. There are fewer jobs worth pursuing, the competition for those jobs is high, and applying for them can itself cost money.

The cost has become so prohibitive that Mason has mostly opted out of the bidding process for jobs altogether. “I almost only apply for those I’m invited to, which don’t cost Connects at all,” she said.

Connects spent on proposals generally aren’t returned simply because another freelancer is hired.4

Mason’s position is helped somewhat by her years of documented history on the platform. She is a “Top Rated” veteran with over $300,000 in platform earnings and 15 years of verified experience, which Upwork’s algorithm looks favorably on.

Her profile weight allows her to sit back and wait for free, inbound invitations from clients.

A newcomer with no reviews doesn’t have that option. They have no choice but to use Connects, especially because they generally receive fewer complimentary tokens than established workers.

That makes the current market on Upwork difficult if you’re considering transcription as a brand-new career, especially if you don’t have a financial safety net.

Given the dire state of the market, Mason’s advice to newcomers is to specialize. The job loss has been concentrated in the general transcription market, and niche subfields often still require a human touch.

“Get a certification in legal or medical, because AI can’t compare on those fronts,” Mason advised. “It’s just not accurate enough. General transcription is dead.”

In many subfields, the stakes are higher, too, which further encourages clients to hire real workers instead of using AI.

While AI transcripts might be good enough for podcasts (for example), the cost of an error in the medical and legal field can be much higher. That creates a stronger argument for human review and specialized expertise.

Recent examples demonstrate those risks.

In August 2026, Australia’s ABC reported on a case involving an AI medical scribe that allegedly generated a false statement in a patient’s medical documentation. The patient, Rebecca Green, said an AI-generated record incorrectly claimed that she had microdosed psychedelic mushrooms.5

Because Green was on workers’ compensation at the time, the AI’s hallucination about illegal drug use could have ruined her case.

Concerns about AI’s limitations have also emerged in the legal sector.

A June 2026 report in The Wall Street Journal discussed continuing concerns about AI transcription accuracy in court reporting. The report touched on how automated systems lack the ability to record nonverbal gestures and struggle to transcribe through distracting courtroom noises like coughs or door slams.6

The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) has stated that “such technologies have already proven to be untrustworthy and risky … especially when compared to the tremendous human expertise, integrity, and experience of court reporters.”7

As an example, the NCRA pointed the Journal to the 2023 Alex Murdaugh double-murder trial, where a digital backup system produced a transcript that was deemed too flawed to be of much use.

That doesn’t mean AI is wholly incapable of operating in the medical and legal fields, but accuracy becomes more valuable as the consequences of an error increase, and that’s potentially where specialized human transcriptionists have the strongest opportunity to remain competitive.

The advice to “just specialize” sounds reasonable, but retraining can be expensive and time-consuming. The legal and medical fields have their own credentialing, privacy, regulatory, and employment requirements.

Mason herself has considered following her own advice and moving into specialized transcription.

She hasn’t.

“I’ve thought about it, but am just stubborn about not wanting to go back to school,” she said. “I’m about to turn 50 and already have a tech school certificate from the ’90s and an AAS in accounting. It’s just more than I want to do.”

This is a reality that doesn’t always appear in discussions about AI and the future of work. People often suggest the choice is between adapting or failing. Mason chooses to stay in the market she already knows, relying on the reputation and relationships she’s built over more than a decade and taking the work that’s available.

Of course, whether this path is viable for most newcomers is another question entirely.

Don’t fall for scams in your desperation to land work

If you’re desperate to land work in a shrinking market, you may be less discerning about the jobs you apply for. Generally, spotting a transcription scam on Upwork requires watching for unrealistic pay rates (e.g., hundreds of dollars simply to retype a handwritten document) and requests to move off-platform, which Upwork’s terms of service prohibit.

Mason also warned us about scams on other platforms. A few months ago, she posted on LinkedIn about a scam involving fake recruiters impersonating Kraft Heinz.

Her advice to others is to verify everything independently.

If a recruiter contacts you, find the company’s official website and check whether the position actually exists. Pay close attention to the recruiter’s email address, and when in doubt, contact the company’s HR department directly.

Most importantly, never pay money to get a job. A legitimate employer won’t require you to pay upfront fees, deposit a check to buy equipment, or send money back to receive your wages.

Mason has seen enough suspicious offers to have developed a sense of humor about the whole thing. “If there was a job where you just told people if they were getting scammed or not, I’d be rich,” she told us.

If you’re considering general transcription as an easy way to enter the remote-work economy, Mason wouldn’t recommend it.

Mason’s experience suggests that the market has fundamentally changed, as the old strategy (learn to type quickly, sign up for a freelance marketplace, and build a sustainable income) is much harder to make work today.

AI has reduced demand for the most basic transcription tasks. Offshore competition has pushed prices down further, and freelance marketplaces are adding their own costs and pressures.

That doesn’t mean there is no money to be made in freelance transcription. For an established specialist with a strong reputation and recurring clients, it can still be viable.

However, there’s no question that someone starting from zero in 2026 is entering a very different industry from the one Mason entered in 2010.
